Marine Mammal Strandings on Cape Cod with Michaela Wellman

The Wellfleet Historical Society & Museum Presents
Marine Mammal Strandings on Cape Cod
With Michaela Wellman
IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue (MMR Team is the responding agency for live and dead stranded marine mammals, including dolphins, porpoises, whales, and seals, on Cape Cod down to the Southeastern border of Massachusetts, covering ~750 miles of coastline. Cape Cod has the highest frequency of small cetacean mass strandings in the world, driven primarily by the gently sloping sand flats, large tidal fluctuations, close proximity to fertile feeding grounds, social nature of the species that strand, and the hook-like shape of the Cape itself. Wellfleet specifically is a hotspot within a hotspot for these strandings. IFAW's veterinarians and biologists perform an in-field health assessment on every live stranded cetacean and those that are deemed sufficiently healthy are immediately release back to the ocean. Join IFAW Stranding Technician Michaela Wellman and learn more about the critical work that IFAW's MMR team does right here in your own backyard!

Field School: Islands of Cape Cod by Land and Sea
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
June 20, 21 and 22
Separated from the mainland and surrounded by water, islands are alluring because of their remote and unique nature. This field school will feature some of the unique islands of the Cape. From Great Island in Wellfleet to the tiny isles of Pleasant Bay, we will uncover the unique geologic history of these places.
These islands are also home to a wide array of wildlife. Along the way, we will search for diamondback terrapins, horseshoe crabs, and a variety of bird species, including nesting shorebirds. This active field school will feature both hiking and kayaking explorations.
Important Reminders: Previous (recent) paddling experience and good swimming ability are required. This course does not provide paddling instruction for beginners. Participants must have basic paddling skills. Open water bodies in which you'll be experiencing both wind and tide is not where you want to learn how to steer a boat!
Participants may choose among available single kayaks. All equipment is provided; all participants must wear life jackets.
*Please note: the hours listed on the schedule may vary from the sample schedule in the field school brochure and are subject to change based on tides, staff, optimal wildlife sightings, and other variables. A detailed schedule will be prepared and sent to registrants at approximately 3-4 weeks in advance.
This course is one of several Cape Cod Field Schools offered. To learn more, visit www.massaudubon.org/capecodfieldschools.

FEMALE HUSBANDS
Long before people identified as transgender or lesbian, there were female husbands and the women who loved them. Female husbands - people assigned female who transed gender, lived as men, and married women - were true queer pioneers. Moving deftly from the colonial era to just before the First World War, Jen Manion uncovers the riveting and very personal stories of ordinary people who lived as men despite tremendous risk, danger, violence, and threat of punishment. Female Husbands weaves the story of their lives in relation to broader social, economic, and political developments in the United States and the United Kingdom while also exploring how attitudes towards female husbands shifted in relation to transformations in gender politics and women’s rights, ultimately leading to the demise of he category of female husband' in the early twentieth century.
Female Husbands offers a dynamic, varied, and complex history of the LGBTQ past.
Jen Manion is a social and cultural historian whose work examines the role of gender and sexuality in American life. Manion is the author of Liberty's Prisoners: Carceral Culture in Early America (Penn, 2015) and Female Husbands: A Trans History. (Cambridge,2020) and co-editor of Taking Back the Academy (Routledge, 2004) with Jim Downs. Jen has written dozens of essays and articles for popular and scholarly publications. Jen received a PhD in history from Rutgers University and a BA in history with an English minor from the University of Pennsylvania, magna cum laude. Jen is Professor of History and Sexuality, Women's and Gender Studies at Amherst College.

Author Talk: Michael V. Pregot
Wellfleet Public Library
Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod
From the start of the Puritan era through the end of he Revolutionary War, Boston was the central hub o the slave trade. Slaves were brought onboard ships fron the African coast with regularity, often mastered by Cape Cod sea captains. The total number of slaves per household was certainly much smaller in the Northeast than they were in the larger plantations found in the South, but, nonetheless, a much-needed labor force was deemed a necessity. After Massachusetts legally prohibited the practice of slavery in 1780, sea captains continued to engage in its development in a variety of ways. Some captains would bring slaves in surreptitiously, while other masters of the sea profited in indirect ways. Some mariners provided inexpensive low-grade food to the plantations, while others would bring cotton to the North for textile work. In the early 1800s the Commonwealth's shipping industry became divided, with some men fighting for the cause of abolitionism while other captains preterred a very slow demise to this human trafficking. Massachusetts would eventually lead a movement to fight for total abolitionism. To understand the thinking of the day, religious views, political positions, economic factors, and social movements are all placed into sharper detail and given greater context. By sharing protiles of notable Black people living in Massachusetts, we acknowledge the enormous positive contributions made by those forced to relinquish their personal right to freedom.
Michael V. Pregot is an educator, writer, and admirer of local history. As a Cape Cod resident, he loves researching the stories of historic maritime figures to share familiar and yet untold vignettes of their deeds with others. His goal is to keep an audience drawn to and focused on vivid stories of the sea.

Artist Talk: Korn with Megan Hinton
Farm Projects
Artist talk with Megan Hinton: Friday, June 27, 6 pm
Farm Projects is pleased to present Parting Line, a solo exhibition by Korn that brings a raw and urgent material language to themes of queerness, intimacy, and resistance.
Originally from Recife, Brazil, Korn studied art in Memphis before relocating to Brooklyn, and later the Hudson valley; where they spent 25 years fabricating work in glass, wood, and metal for other artists at Polich Fine Art foundry/UAP. After decades away from their own practice, Korn has returned with a distinct lexicon shaped by letterpress, printmaking, photo transfers, concrete and metal.
In this collection, Korn turns to the architecture of queer cruising—the coded language of public restrooms and hidden meeting places—as a lens for exploring bodily autonomy, visibility, and risk in a repressive political moment. These charged prints and sculptural works evoke the materiality of tile, plumbing, urine, and surveillance, transforming spaces of marginalization into ones of subversion and connection.
Balancing industrial grit with moments of intimacy, Korn reimagines sites often weaponized against trans and queer bodies into arenas of pleasure, protest, and visibility.

Author Talk: Don Gillis
Wellfleet Public Library
The Battle for Boston
Author Don Gillis in conversation with Mary Nee
The Battle for Boston captures the remarkable era under Mayor Ray Flynn, whose election in 1985 marked the beginning of a profound shift in the citys political and social landscape. Don Gillis, a Flynn senior advisor, chronicles the inspiring journey of a city that dared to challenge the entrenched power brokers, including developers, landlords, and banking industry leaders, through powerful grassroots campaigns. In a historic turn, in 2021, Michelle Wu became the first woman, person of color, and Asian-American elected Mayor of Boston.
Wu's victory on a similarly progressive platform as Flynn underscores the enduring relevance of his legacy, signaling a hopeful future for more inclusive and effectively governed cities. The Battle for Boston poses a critical inquiry: Can cities truly embrace progressivism and govern effectively in the twenty-first century?
Don Gillis, PhD, is a longtime Wellfleet homeowner and current resident. He has been a community organizer and activist in Boston, advised mayors of several cities, and led economic and workforce development agencies in Massachusetts. He holds a PhD in urban sociology and the sociology of education, as well as an MA in community sociology, from Boston University, where he has taught undergraduate and graduate students.
Mary Nee, an Eastham resident, was a Senior Budget and Policy Analyst for the MA Senate Ways and Means Committee. In 1984, she joined Boston Mayor Ray Flynn and established the Mayor's Office of Capital Planning, producing a $1.3 billion rebuilding plan-the first in 23 years. She has held senior leadership positions in several nonprofit organizations. For the past 4 years, she has chaired the Eastham Zoning Task Force, receiving voter approval for 20 zoning amendments.

Through original essays and engaging conversations with dozensof indie musicians representing several subgenres, scenes, and eras, food takes center stage in stories about being on tour and eating on tour and how this basic human necessity can reate a sense of community and interconnectedness in one of the most mobile industries in the world. Based broadly on the subject of eating on tour, these entries each spin off into their own focused and exciting behind-the- scenes story, but all contirm what Luke Pyenson and Alex Bleeker suspected all along-tood looms large in the lives of touring musicians, and it can be used as a gateway into understanding what going on tour is really like.

Author Talk: Abigail Leonard
Wellfleet Public Library
Four Mothers
Tsukasa in Japan grapples with memories of a difficult childhood as she tries to chart a new, healthier path for her own daughter while balancing onerous cultural expectations. Chelsea in Kenya endures a devastating loss just before she gives birth and finds that without the traditional support of previous generations, motherhood can be grueling - but it can also provide emotional healing.
Anna in Finland navigates a complicated relationship with her child's father, but the country's robust family policies allow her to still pursue the kind of parenthood that she envisioned. Sarah in the Us leaves the religious community that raised her in order to create a less traditional family of her own only to find she's largely confronting motherhood alone.
Utterly propulsively readable from page one, Leonard interweaves these stories with a critically researched exploration of how parental support programs evolved in each country-and why some provide more help than others. As nations around the world debate programs like paid leave, universal daycare, reproductive healthcare, and family tax incentives, Four Mothers offers a uniquely intimate, moving portrait of what those policies mean for parents on the ground-and considers what modern families really want.
Abigail Leonard is an international reporter and news producer, previously based in Tokyo, where she was a frequent contributor to NPR, Time Magazine and New York Times video.
Her reporting focuses on issues that impact women, including the Japanese MeToo movement; Japanese "salary-women"; caregiver spouses of injured veterans; and women who give birth in private prisons. She now lives in Washington DC with her husband and three children.

Opening Reception - Phyllis Ewen at Great Pond Gallery
Wellfleet Adult Community Center
Monthly exhibit of Outer Cape Contemporary Artists
July - Phyllis Ewen
On exhibit: July 6 - August 1
Opening Reception: July 6, 4:00 - 6:00 PM
Curated by Robert Rindler
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In my work, I explore how our imagination and memories interact with the natural world. The movement of the earth’s surface has been a source of inspiration and imagery for more than a decade. The surface of the earth has many forces that affect it.
In 3-dimensional reliefs, I invite viewers to imagine themselves within the seascape above and below the surface of the water. In topographical waterscapes such as The Sea is Boiling and Polar Melt I scanned charts and weather maps, altered them in Photoshop, and printed them. Then they are reassembled to form imagined waterscapes that highlight the changing nature of our seas; rising waters and melting glaciers – the effects of anthropogenic global warming. Although maps imply a viewer looking down at the landscape, I hope that the dimensional qualities of my images allow us imagine ourselves within it; to inhabit the seas as another way of understanding.
In AMBIENT FIELD, I use maps of the ocean floor to suggest the slower-acting forces of deep time. The depth and texture are both actual and an illusion. The layers of the installation are attached with magnets, reflecting the magnetic fields in the earth’s tectonic plates.
ARTIST’S BIO:
Phyllis Ewen lives in Massachusetts, with studios in Somerville and Wellfleet. She is a member of the Kingston Gallery in Boston where she just had another one-person show, INUNDATION in May, 2025 and also at the AIR Gallery in Brooklyn that was well received and reviewed.
Her art is in public collections, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the DeCordova Museum, the Boston Public Library, Harvard University, the Reykjanes Museum of Art, and numerous corporate and private collections.
Ewen’s work has been shown widely. In 2017, her work was in a 3-artist exhibit at the Reykjanes Museum of Art in Iceland, Við Sjónarrönd/Above And Below The Horizon, a two-person show, Imprint, in York Maine, and a solo, Land and Water, at the Lesley University Spotlight Gallery.

Hiroya Tsukamoto: A Journey Through Strings and Stories

A Journey Through Strings and Stories"

Tsukamoto’s concerts are not just musical events; they are immersive experiences that weave lyrical narratives with intricate melodies. Recognized for his soulful performances that create an orchestra at his fingertips, he invites audiences into his world of musical exploration and emotional expression. This is a rare opportunity to witness a performer who has been celebrated for his ability to take listeners on an “impressionistic journey” (Boston Herald). Enchanting music that promises to resonate long after the final note is played.

Author Talk: Christina Clancy
Wellfleet Public Library
The Snowbirds
Kim and Grant are at a turning point. A couple for thirty years, their "separate but together" partnership is running up against the realities of late middle age. Escaping the bitter cold of a Midwestern winter for the hot desert sun of Palm Springs seems as good a solution as any to the more intractable problems they face. When they arrive at Le Desert, a quirky condo community where everyone knows everyone's business, Kim immediately embraces the opportunity to make new friends and explore a more adventurous side of her personality. Meanwhile, Grant struggles to find his footing in this unfamiliar landscape, leaving Kim to wonder if their relationship can survive the snowbird season. But when Grant goes missing on a hike in the Palm Springs mountains, Kim is forced to consider two terrifying outcomes: either Grant is truly lost, or this time, he's really left her. The exhilarating, but often confusing transitions of midlife are pitched against the promise and glamour of Palm Springs in this tender, honest story of what it takes to commit to someone for a lifetime. With compassion and humor, The Snowbirds explores the redemptive power of finding ourselves, and of being found.
Christina Clancy is the author of The Second Home and Shoulder Season. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times, The Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, The Sun magazine, and in various literary journals. She splits her time between Madison and Palm Springs.

Author Talk: J. Hoberman
Wellfleet Public Library
Like Paris in the 1920s, New York City in the 1960s was a cauldron of avant-garde ferment and artistic innovation. Boundaries were transgressed and new forms created. Drawing on interviews, memoirs, and the alternative press, Everything Is Now chronicles this collective drama as it was played out in coffeehouses, bars, lofts, storefront theaters, and, ultimately, the streets. The principals here are penniless filmmakers, jazz musicians, and pertorming poets, as well as less
classifiable artists. Most were outsiders at the time. They include Amiri Baraka, Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Yayoi Kusama, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Carolee Schneemann, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, and many more. Some were associated with specific movements, but there were also movements of one. Their art, rooted in the detritus and excitement of urban life, was taboo-breaking and confrontational. As J. Hoberman shows in this riveting history, these subcultures coalesced into a counterculture that changed the city, the country, and the world.
J. Hoberman was for over three decades a film and culture critic for The Village Voice. His previous books have explored the subculture of midnight movies, the rise and fall of Yiddish-language cinema, the international Communist avantgarde, SoHo performance art, and the underground filmmaker Jack Smith. His "found illusions" trilogy-which includes The Dream Life, Make My Day, and An Army of Phantoms - used Hollywood to refract the history of the Cold War.

Community Read of Sebastian Junger's "In My Time of Dying"
Wellfleet Public Library
Presented by the Lily House
For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 in Truro. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital by ambulance. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him. "It's okay," his father said "There's nothing to be scared of. I'll take care of you." That was the last thing Junger remembered until he came to the next day when he was told he had suffered a ruptured aneurysm that he should not have survived. This experience spurred Junger-a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical-to undertake a scientific, philosophical, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die. In My Time of Dying is part medical drama, part searing autobiography, and part national inquiry into the ultimate unknowable mystery.
Led by Kim Crawford, board member of the The Lily House and Senior Minister Emerita of Arlington Street Church (UU), Boston.

Hush Little Fire
Judith Newcomb Stiles in conversation with Kai Potter
When Mary Newcombe dutifully returns to Cape Cod with her twelve-year-old son to celebrate Christmas with her adoptive mother, Birdie, the only part of the trip she looks forward to is digging beach clay for pottery to stoke her beloved kiln. But while she's home, a suspicious fire destroys the town health clinic, and Mary becomes a leading suspect. Mary can't remember the night of the fire and, as always, her mother isn't talking. Birdie has kept secrets from Mary her entire life, beginning with the truth about Mary's birth mother. When Mary discovers her adoptive father socked away a small fortune performing pre-Roe v. Wade illegal abortions in the clinic that burned to the ground, she's done with being kept in the dark. As the days tick by and pressures mount to find the arsonist, Mary digs deeper into Wellfleet's history, and more secrets start to unfurl.
A cross-generational mystery told through the perspectives of four women living on the underbelly of Cape Cod, Judith Newcomb Stiles's Hush Little Fire is the perfect read for fans of Bonnie Garmus, Dennis Lehane, and Adrienne Brodeur.
From her Cape Cod studio, Judith Newcomb Stiles creates original ceramics inspired by the textures and vibrant colors of the seashore. While she waits for her pots to dry, she writes essays, fiction, and news articles for the Italian publication Ytali Global, covering all things American. Her short stories and literary essays can be found in Europa Quotidiano, Hemingway Shorts, The Ex-Puritan, and The New York Times. Stiles lives in the Wellfleet house, commuting thirty steps to her pottery studio and three blocks to The Newcomb Hollow Shop & Gallery. Hush Little Fire is her debut novel.
Kai Potter is an artist, writer, surfer, and landscape designer born and raised on the outer edge of Cape Cod. He grew up amongst the scrub pines, sand dunes, wild oceans, and colorful characters that shape the landscape there. His book of essays Noticing: The Quiet Season on Outer Cape Cod was published last year by the Provincetown Independent.

Author Talk: Casey Sherman
Wellfleet Public Library
Blood In The Water
When Nathan Carman, a young man with a complicated past, is miraculously rescued from a lifeboat bobbing in the unforgiving North Atlantic, questions swirl about the fate of his mother, who is presumed to have drowned when their fishing boat sank. Nathan is in remarkably good shape for being lost at sea for a week, and his account of what exactly happened out there on the waves raises questions from family members and law enforcement. Nathan's story of a fishing trip gone awry doesn't quite add up, and suspicion mounts. The mysterious murder of Nathan's multi-millionaire grandfather a few years before had made Nathan's mother an extremely wealthy woman. With a seven-million- dollar fortune at stake, did Nathan commit the ultimate betrayal? Or is there more to this tragic tale than meets the eye? From New York Times bestselling author Casey Sherman comes a gripping contemporary true crime narrative for everyone who was fascinated by the Murdaugh murders, and for anyone compelled by the intersection between money, power, and family.
Casey Sherman is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Boston Globe bestselling author of multiple books including The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue (adapted into the 2016 film The Finest Hours), Boston Strong: A City's Triumph Over Tragedy (adapted into the 2016 film Patriots Day), Hunting Whitey: The Inside Story of the Capture & Killing of America's Most Wanted Crime Boss, and A Murder in Hollywood: The Untold Story of Tinseltown's Most Shocking _Crime. His 2022 true crime bestseller Helltown: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer on Cape Cod is now in development as a limited television series for Amazon Studio. Sherman is a graduate of Barnstable High School.

Author Talk: Paul Lisicky
Wellfleet Public Library
Song So Wild And Blue
From the moment Paul Lisicky heard Joni Mitchell while growing up in New Jersey, he recognized she was that rarity among musicians-a talent whose combination of introspection, liberation, and deep musicality set her apart from any other artist of the time. As a young man, Paul was a budding songwriter who took his cues from Mitchell's mysteries and idiosyncrasies. But as he matured, he set his guitar aside and turned to prose, a practice that would eventually take him to the lowa Writers' Workshop and into the professional world of letters. Song So Wild and Blue is a gorgeously written, beautifully intimate, and unique tribute to the woman who shaped generations of creators and thinkers. A guide to life that is part memoir, part biography, and part nomage, Song So Wild and Blue is a joy for devoted Joni enthusiasts, budding writers, and artists of all stripes.
Paul Lisicky is the author of seven books, including Later: My Life at the Edge of the World, The Narrow Door, Unbuilt Projects, The Burning House, Famous Builder, and Lawnboy. His work has appeared in The Atlantic, BuzzFeed, the New York Times, Ploughshares, and in many other publications. His honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the James Michener/Copernicus Society, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the Rose Dorothea Award from the Provincetown Library. He lives in Brooklyn.

Author Talk: Wendy A. Horwitz
Wellfleet Public Library
In Milkweed and Honey Cake: A Memoir in Ritual Moments, Wendy A. Horwitz explores how ritual can exalt ordinary moments and frame the extraordinary. With observations from nature, religion, and literature, she tells stories about celebration, loss, change, and the best way to open a pomegranate. Lyrical and funny, thought-provoking and deeply moving, this book is at once a meditation on our desire for meaning and the story of a woman's lifelong efforts to create it. Wendy will read short excerpts from the book and will discuss ritual (in its myriad forms), the writing process, and the role of family and community in creating meaning during challenging times. Q&A and book-signing/sales will follow.
Wendy A. Horwitz's essays have been published in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Afterimage, Neurology (Humanities Section), Jewish Literary Journal, Intrepid Times, and McClatchy-Tribune News Service, among others. Originally trained as a pediatric psychologist, she lives in Philadelphia, where she teaches writing and health humanities.

Author Talk: David Denby
Wellfleet Public Library
Eminent Jews: David Denby in conversation with James Carroll
Leonard Bernstein, Mel Brooks, Betty Friedan, and Norman Mailer. Brilliant, brash, yet soulful, they were 100 percent Jewish and 100 percent American.
They upended restrained culture of their forebears and changed American life. As prosperity for Jews increased and anti- Semitism began to fade after World War Il, these four creative giants stormed through the latter half of the twentieth century, altering the way people around the world listened to music, detined what was vulgar, comprehended the relations of men and women, and understood the American soul. Celebratory yet candid, at times fiercely critical, David Denby's Eminent Jews presents these four figures as egotistical and generous — larger-than-life, all of them, yet vulnerable, even heartbreaking, in their ambition, ferocity, and pride.
David Denby is the New York Times bestselling author of 1997's Great Books. His other books include 2004's American Sucker and 2016's Lit Up: One Reporter. Three Schools. Twenty-four Books That Can Change Lives. He was a film critic for New York magazine and The New Yorker, where he is now a staff writer. His essays have appeared in The New Republic and The Atlantic. He lives in New York City with his wife, novelist Susan Rieger.
James Carroll served as Catholic chaplain at Boston University from 1969 to 1974. He left the priesthood to become a writer, and for twenty-three years he wrote a weekly op-ed column for The Boston Globe. He has written twelve novels and nine works of nonfiction.

Author Talk: Susan Rieger
Wellfleet Public Library
Like Mother, Like Mother
Lila Peirera is a force to be reckoned with. Raised in 1970s Detroit by her abusive father and stern Bubbe after her mother Zelda's early death, Lila escaped the poverty of her childhood to reach stratospheric heights as editor-in-chief of The Washington Globe. There, she exposes political scandals and establishes a reputation as a no-nonsense, straight-talker. At home, she's just as tough, leaving the raising of her three daughters to her kind and loyal husband. Having always craved more of her mother's attention--and having long questioned the circumstances surrounding her grandmother Zelda's death--Lila's youngest daughter, Grace, writes an autobiographical novel. In her book, Grace speculates that Zelda never died, rather, she abandoned her children, forcing Lila to become the hard-edged, dispassionate woman Grace grew up with. Grace's book is her attempt to make sense of her mother, but she could never have imagined that Lila would die shortly after its publication. Lila leaves Grace a posthumous directive: find out the truth about what really happened to Zelda. Zigzagging between Washington, D.C., Detroit, and New York City, and probing the truths that all families attempt to hide between generations, Like Mother, Like Mother is a smart, lively, and deeply moving novel about the inescapability of genetic inheritance.
Susan Rieger is a graduate of Columbia Law School. She has worked as a residential college dean at Yale and as an associate provost at Columbia. She has taught law to undergraduates at both schools and written frequently about the law for newspapers and magazines. She is the author of 2017's The Heirs and 2014's The Divorce Papers. She lives in New York City with her husband, author and journalist David Deby.

Author Talk: Cynthia Blakeley
Wellfleet Public Library
Cynthia Blakeley In Conversation with Lisa Mecham: The Innermost House
Raised in a nineteenth-century saltbox house in Wellfleet, Cynthia Blakeley was both surrounded by generations of immediate and extended family and isolated by the mysteries locked inside her affectionate yet elusive mother and short-fused father. While she and her sisters and cousins roamed the Outer Cape drinking in the dunes, swimming in kettle ponds, and dancing in Provincetown- Blakeley also turned to the inner world of her journals as she contended with her own secrets and memories. Blakeley's captivating memoir The Innermost House moves fluidly through time, grappling with the question of who owns a memory or secret and how our narrative choices not only describe but also shape and change us. In this insightful and poignant account of tenacious year-rounders on Cape Cod, Blakeley contends that making sense of ourselves is a collaborative affair, one that begins with understanding those we came from.
Cynthia Blakeley is a freelance academic editor and an instructor at Emory University in Atlanta, where she teaches courses on memory and memoir, interdisciplinary research, and theories of dream interpretation. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in Cape Cod Voice, HerStry, and Dreamers Magazine. The Innermost House is her first book.
Lisa Mecham's work has appeared in The New York Times: Tiny Modern Love, Roxane Gay's bestselling anthology Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture, and Huffpost Personal. Her digital archive project, Finding Judy, is preserving and sharing the life of Judith Shahn- a prolific yet unsung artist of the mid-20th century with Outer Cape connections.

Field School: Introduction to Shorebirds
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
August 2 and 3
There is no better place to explore and study the topic of shorebird ecology than the beautiful coastal communities of Cape Cod at the height of shorebird migration. This course is designed to give the novice birder, or those inexperienced with coastal birds, the skills to identify the 'peeps,' plovers, and other shorebird species.
During the course, we will touch upon topics such as identification, biology, behavior, and migration. Our discussions will also cover the issues and threats these birds face in coastal environments. Field excursions to barrier beaches, salt marshes, tidal rivers, and other unique ecosystems of the Outer Cape will provide opportunities to become acquainted with the diverse array of shorebirds for which the region is famous. Gulls, terns and herons will also be conspicuous inhabitants of these areas and will not be ignored!
Field walks may average 4-5 miles in length and on varied terrain-from established trails to beach sand and up-and-down a few hills and dunes. While there is considerable walking, most is done at a leisurely pace as we look for birds. Please pack a brown bag lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. Sunscreen is also a good idea! Please dress in layers and dress for the weather (we will walk in all weather conditions). Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking. Binoculars are highly recommended - you may consider bringing a spotting scope as well.

Reflections on the Birth and Life of the Cape Cod National Seashore with Bill Burke
Wellfleet Historical Society at the Wellfleet Public Library
In the depths of the Great Depression, the National Park Service first floated the concept of a national seashore from Duxbury to Provincetown. By the time Congress put forth legislation in the late 1950s, Cape Codders hotly debated the concept, with one prominent citizen predicting tyrannical destruction of inalienable rights of citizens." National Park Service employee Bill Burke's presentation includes the genesis of the idea, philosophy behind new parks, the master plan for the seashore, growing pains, big compromises, lingering controversies, what's historic and what's not, successes and challenges, and what the future might hold. No one said this would be easy.

Documentary Screening: Maya and the Wave
Wellfleet Public Library
Maya Gabeira grows up in Rio de Janeiro, begins competing in surfing at age 15, and turns pro at 17. However, her abilities are doubted by many of her big wave surfing male peers. In 2013, Gabeira suffers a devastating wipeout at Nazaré, Portugal. She nearly drowns and endures a prolonged recovery that requires back surgeries and physical therapy. Gabeira eventually returns to Nazaré and breaks the record for the largest wave ever surfed by a woman. Maya and the Wave is a portrait of Gabeira and her struggles to be taken seriously as a woman in a male-dominated sport, focusing in part on the role that sexism played in the response to her injuries while trying to surf giant waves.

Field School: Hiking Backwoods and Beaches
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
June 14 & 15
During this active weekend we will take the road less traveled, cover new ground, and experience the Cape at a beautiful time of year. Our extended hikes will explore the backwoods, remote beaches, dramatic dunes, quiet kettle ponds, and sheltering woodlands of the Outer Cape and take us to "hidden" parts of the Cape Cod National Seashore and local conservation areas that the average visitor and local rarely explore.
The Outer Cape will be the focus of our hikes. We can expect to experience quiet pine woods, dramatic bluffs, hills and valleys, peeks of the Atlantic Ocean, subdued saltmarshes, and time on the Outer Beach.
Each walk will avarage 5 miles in length and on varied terrain - from established wooded trails to beach sand and up-and-down a few hills and dunes.
While the routes of our walks do not allow for shortcuts, and the goal is to walk at a steady pace, we will also stop to enjoy the birds, wildlife, and local history. We will also take water breaks and stop for lunch. A shorter sunset walk at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is also schedules - a perfect way to the end the first day!
Please pack a brown bag lunch, drinking waster, and snacks for each day hike.
Please dress in layers and dress for the weather (we will walk in all weather conditions). Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking. You might consider bringing binoculars, and a notepad or journal- you never know when inspiration strikes! A backpack in which to carry your gear is also needed.

1/4 mile Swim - 10 mile Bike - 5k Run
About the Course
The swim takes place in one of Wellfleet's many kettle ponds. Water is always calm and one of the first to warm up in the season. The bike course consists of two 5-mile loops through one of the most beautiful areas you will ride all year. The run is an out-and-back course that turns right near the famed Beachcomber Restaurant, where athletes will catch ocean views before turning at the halfway point (when we say it's all downhill from here, we mean it!).

Early Bird Walk at Wellfleet Bay
Mass Audubon
Experience the best of morning bird activity with a Wellfleet Bay naturalist on this walk along sanctuary trails. From pine woodlands and a freshwater pond to salt marsh and beach, the site's variety of natural communities offer diverse bird sightings. Total distance traveled is less than 1.5 miles at a slow to moderate pace as we look and listen for songbirds, shorebirds, wading birds, and other wildlife. This walk is a great introduction to the birds of Cape Cod and appropriate for birders of all levels. Binoculars are welcome but not required.

The Bohemian, adapted from Willa Cather
directed by Brenda Withers
Ten years after striking out on his own, Nils Ericson returns home in search of what he left behind: the land he knew, the family he confounds, and the girl he (almost) lost. An adaptation of a classic tale by one of America's most beloved writers.
